Final Fantasy VII Steal

This is a Guide to The Original Final Fantasy VII.

Steal Guide

Using the Steal Command can be frustrating, as it can take a large number of attempts in order to successfully steal. But it can pay off handsomely as you can steal equipment which is over-powered for that point of the game. Make sure you purchase the "Sneak Glove" Accessory in Disc 2 as soon as possible; when equipped, it makes stealing easier.

You will need to excavate the Sector 5 Key from Bone Village (choose to search for "normal treasure", the Key is usually located near the burnt out fire on the upper left of the screen). You can know you are far enough into the game to excavate it if you try and re-enter Midgar and there is a man standing there, wondering where he lost his key, was it on that camping trip (yes, it fell out of his pocket when he was sitting round the fire while camping in Bone Village with his friends).

Then revisit Wall Market in Midgar. The man who collects scraps in the Weapon Shop will sell you the Sneak Glove for 129,000 Gil.

You can use the "Steal" Command in battle by equipping a Steal materia to a free slot in your weapon or Armor. Just open up the menu and select "Materia" once you've obtained a Steal materia.

You can pick up a Steal materia in the Sewers in Midgar. You can also buy Steal materia in the village "Kalm".

Steal List

N.B. This is not a complete Steal List. It aims to feature only the more significant items you can steal in Final Fantasy VII.

Tips

In the game, to view enemy names, toggle on the in-battle information display by pressing Select on a PS1/PS2/PS3 controller, or the central touch bar on a PS4 controller.

If you get the battle message "Couldn't steal anything", it means the enemy does have something to steal. If the battle message "Nothing to steal" appears, then either you have already stolen from that enemy, or the enemy never had anything to steal.

N.B. with enemies you can steal an item from, it is always the case in the original FFVII that there is only one stealable item per encounter with that enemy. So for example if you want to steal 3 Carbon Bangles in the Shinra Building, you will have to encounter at least 3 Moth Slashers. You can still steal e.g. up to 3 Ziedrichs from Rude, but in different encounters.
